The Monument to the Asen Dynasty (also known as "The Horsemen") was erected in 1985 in Veliko Tarnovo to mark the 800th anniversary of the uprising of the brothers Asen and Petar and the restoration of the Bulgarian state. It stands on the rocky ridge above the bend of the Yantra River, facing the medieval capital of Tsarevets, and is among the city's most recognisable silhouettes.
The composition presents the four rulers of the Asen dynasty — Asen, Petar, Kaloyan and Ivan Asen II — as bronze equestrian figures arranged around an upright granite sword rising about 33 metres. The sword, a symbol of restored statehood and the military might of the Second Bulgarian Empire, is visible from almost every point in the city.
Krum Damianov shaped the monument in his characteristic monumental language — large, purified volumes, the tense dynamism of the horses, and a strict vertical around which the whole composition is organised. The space around the monument is laid out as an open terrace, today one of the most visited places in Veliko Tarnovo.
